Topic: Major Crops of India: Distribution and Conditions · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 4 "Agriculture"; Class 12, Ch 3 "Land Resources and Agriculture"

Meaning

Aus, aman and boro are the three rice crops grown in one year in West Bengal. Class 10 adds Assam and Odisha.

  • Aus is an autumn crop. It is sown before the early monsoon or with it.
  • Aman is the main winter crop of the monsoon season.
  • Boro is a spring-summer crop. It is grown with irrigation, which means water supplied by canals or wells instead of rain.

A warm climate, plenty of rain and irrigation make more than one rice crop possible in a year. The south also grows two or three rice crops a year.

Example

In the Ganga delta of West Bengal, a farmer can harvest aman rice in winter. The same farmer can then grow boro rice on the same field in spring and summer, using water from tubewells.

Don't confuse with

  • Kharif and rabi: these are India's two main crop seasons. Kharif crops are sown with the monsoon. Rabi crops are sown in winter. Aus, aman and boro are rice crops of eastern India only.
