Geography glossary

Also called: Bailadila · Topic: Mineral Resources of India: Distribution and Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Minerals and Energy Resources"; Class 12, Ch 5 "Mineral and Energy Resources"

Meaning

Bailadila is a hill range in Dantewada district (formerly part of Bastar), Chhattisgarh. Its name means "ox's hump", after its shape. It holds 14 deposits of super high-grade haematite, an iron ore with the physical qualities best suited to steel making. NMDC mines it. The ore is exported to Japan and South Korea through Visakhapatnam port.

Example

Iron ore from the Bailadila mines in Dantewada travels to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and is shipped from there to steel mills in Japan and South Korea.

Don't confuse with

  • Kudremukh: this means "horse face" and is in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, in the Western Ghats. It sent ore by slurry pipeline to a port near Mangaluru, and mining there stopped at the close of 2005 under a Supreme Court order.
