Bay of Fundy

Topic: Movements of Ocean Water: Waves, Tides and Currents · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 13 "Movements of Ocean Water"

Meaning

The Bay of Fundy lies between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Canada, on the Atlantic coast. It has the highest tides in the world, with a tidal bulge of about 15–16 m. Its long, funnel-like shape squeezes the incoming tide, so the water piles up higher and higher towards the head of the bay. The water can rise by about 240 cm in an hour. It is a classic example of how the shape of a coast decides tidal range (the gap between high and low water).

Example

At low tide, boats in Fundy's harbours sit on bare mud. A few hours later they float again in deep water. In India, the funnel-shaped Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat shows the same effect on a smaller scale, with the country's largest tidal range.
