Bayan Obo
Topic: Primary Activities: Gathering, Pastoralism, Agriculture and Mining · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Bayan Obo is the world's largest rare-earth deposit. It lies in Inner Mongolia in northern China. Rare earths are a group of metals used to make strong magnets, electronics, electric vehicle motors, wind turbines and defence equipment. The deposit is a big reason why China leads the world in mining rare earths, and China also refines most of the world's supply. This gives China power over a mineral that other countries need for clean energy and defence.
Example
Bayan Obo is near the industrial city of Baotou in Inner Mongolia. In 2024–25 China restricted exports of rare-earth technology and magnets (verify current). India and other countries responded by building other sources, for example through the Minerals Security Partnership, which India joined in 2023.
