Bhoodan movement

Geography glossary

Also called: Bhoodan · Topic: Major Crops of India: Distribution and Conditions · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 4 "Agriculture"

Meaning

Bhoodan means "land gift". Vinoba Bhave started this movement on 18 April 1951. He walked from village to village and asked landowners to give part of their land to landless people of their own free will. Its extension, Gramdan, was the gift of whole villages. Because land changed hands without force or violence, the movement was called the "bloodless revolution".

Example

It began at Pochampally in present-day Telangana. There, V. Ramachandra Reddy offered land to landless villagers. NCERT says he gave 80 acres, but most accounts say 100.

Don't confuse with

  • Abolition of zamindari: zamindari was ended by law, which took land from big landlords. Bhoodan depended on owners giving their land voluntarily.
