Biodiversity conservation
Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 14 "Biodiversity and Conservation"
Meaning
Biodiversity conservation means protecting the variety of life (genes, species and ecosystems) while still using it wisely. NCERT says it needs three things:
- educating people
- development that is sustainable, meaning it meets today's needs without harming the future
- local communities and local institutions taking part
It works through laws, protected areas, in situ and ex situ methods, and global treaties such as the CBD. NCERT says the "critical problem" is keeping the conservation effort going over time.
Example
Five villages in Alwar, Rajasthan, declared 1,200 hectares of forest their own sanctuary, the Bhairodev Dakav Sonchuri. They made their own rules, banned hunting and keep outsiders out. It shows conservation led by local people.
