Bonn Challenge
Topic: Geographical Issues: Pollution, Urban Waste, Slums and Land Degradation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Bonn Challenge is a global goal launched in 2011 to restore damaged land. Restoring means bringing degraded and deforested land back to health. The target was 150 million hectares by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. It supports Land Degradation Neutrality, the idea that land restored should at least equal land degraded.
Example
At COP14 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, held in New Delhi in 2019, India raised its own target to restore 26 million hectares by 2030.
Don't confuse with
- Land Degradation Neutrality (SDG 15.3): a goal of keeping the total amount of healthy land stable. The Bonn Challenge sets fixed area targets for restoration.
