Bulk drug parks
Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Bulk drug parks are special industrial parks for making active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). An API is the main chemical in a medicine that makes it work. Three parks were approved in 2022 (verify current). Each park has shared facilities, so companies do not each have to build their own. The aim is to make more APIs in India and depend less on imports from China.
Example
The three parks are at Bharuch (Gujarat), Una (Himachal Pradesh) and Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh).
Don't confuse with
- Pharmaceutical clusters: these are older places where drug making grew over time, such as Hyderabad and Baddi. Bulk drug parks were planned by the government and make only APIs.
- PM MITRA parks: these are seven planned parks for textiles, not medicines.
