Climate change mitigation

Geography glossary

Also called: Mitigation · Topic: Climate Change: Causes, Evidence and the Global Response · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 3 "Climates of India"

Meaning

Climate change mitigation means cutting the causes of global warming. There are two ways to do this. One is to release less greenhouse gas, through renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable lifestyles. The other is to remove more of it through carbon sinks, such as new forests. Class 7 notes that mitigation often clashes with people's wish for growth and more consumption.

Example

India has pledged 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. Non-fossil sources passed 50% of India's installed power capacity in mid-2025. Large solar parks, such as those in Rajasthan's Thar Desert, are a central part of this effort.

Don't confuse with

  • Climate change adaptation: adaptation helps people live with a changing climate, for example through heat action plans. Mitigation tries to stop the change from growing.
