Climograph
Also called: Hythergraph · Topic: Graphical Representation of Data and Thematic Maps · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
A climograph, developed by Griffith Taylor, plots each month's wet-bulb temperature against relative humidity. Relative humidity means how full of moisture the air is. Its close cousin, the hythergraph, plots each month's temperature against rainfall. In both, the 12 monthly points are joined in order to make a closed shape. Each climate gives its own typical shape, so climates can be identified and compared at a glance.
Example
In a hythergraph, an equatorial station such as Singapore makes a tight cluster, because it is hot and wet all year. A monsoon station such as Mumbai makes a long, narrow loop, because it swings between a dry season and a very wet one.
Don't confuse with
- Line and bar graph: this puts months on the X-axis and shows rainfall as bars and temperature as a line. A climograph has no time axis and plots one variable against the other.
