Coal gasification
Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Coal gasification turns coal into a gas called syngas (synthesis gas) instead of burning it. Coal is reacted with steam and oxygen at high temperature to produce the gas. Syngas can be used to make chemicals, fertilisers and fuels. This lets India use its large stock of coal in more ways than just burning it in power plants.
Example
India's National Coal Gasification Mission aims to gasify 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030 (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- Coal-bed methane: This is natural gas that is already trapped in coal seams. It is drawn out by drilling. Gasification makes a new gas from the coal itself.
