Components of population change
Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"
Meaning
The components of population change are the three things that change how many people live in a place: births, deaths and migration. Births add people and deaths remove them. Migration moves people, so the place of origin loses people and the place of destination gains them. Births and deaths together give natural growth. Adding migration gives actual growth.
Example
Kerala has sent many workers to the Gulf countries, such as the UAE. Births and deaths change Kerala's population, but migration does too: it lowers numbers in Kerala and raises them in the Gulf.
Don't confuse with
- Natural growth of population: this uses only two components, births and deaths. It leaves out migration.
