Concerns related to international trade

Geography glossary

Topic: International Trade: Patterns, Ports and the WTO · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 8 "International Trade"

Meaning

This is NCERT's balance sheet of what trade does well and what it does badly. Benefits: regions can specialise, production rises, living standards improve, goods are available worldwide, prices and wages even out across countries, and knowledge and culture spread. Harms: countries become dependent on others, development becomes uneven, people are exploited, and trade rivalry can lead to war. There is also environmental harm. Countries compete to trade more, so resources are used faster than nature can replace them. Profit-driven multinationals in oil, mining, drugs and agri-business pollute, against the rules of sustainable development.

Example

The European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) charges imports of steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity for their carbon emissions from January 2026. India opposes it as a one-sided trade barrier against its exporters.

Don't confuse with

  • Criticism of the WTO: this covers only the complaints against one organisation, the WTO. Concerns related to international trade cover the good and bad effects of all trade.
