Convex slope

Geography glossary

Topic: Topographical Maps: Relief Representation and Interpretation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Topographical Maps"

Meaning

A convex slope is steep in its lower part and gentle in its upper part, so it bulges outward like the outside of a ball. On a map, its contours are close together near the bottom and wide apart near the top. From the top of a convex slope, the valley floor is hidden by the bulge. In exams, "a convex slope is steep in its upper part" is a false statement.

Example

The rounded granite domes around Bengaluru in Karnataka have gently curved tops and steep lower sides. On a map, their contours spread out near the summit and crowd together near the base.

Don't confuse with

  • Concave slope: this is the reverse. It is gentle below and steep above, so its contours are wide at the bottom and close at the top. From its top, you can see the valley floor.
