Corbett National Park
Also called: Jim Corbett National Park · Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"
Meaning
Corbett National Park is India's first national park. It was set up in 1936 as Hailey National Park in Nainital district, Uttarakhand, on the Ramganga river. A national park is an area kept strictly for wildlife, with no forestry, grazing or farming allowed. Project Tiger was launched here in 1973, and Corbett was one of its first nine tiger reserves.
Example
Corbett lies in the foothills of the Himalaya in Uttarakhand, with the Ramganga river flowing through it. It is still a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, more than fifty years after the project began.
Don't confuse with
- Wildlife sanctuary: people may collect minor forest produce in a sanctuary if this does not harm wildlife. A national park like Corbett allows no such use.
- Hailey National Park: this is not a different park. It is Corbett's original 1936 name.
