Meaning
CSIR-NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) is a government research laboratory in Nagpur, Maharashtra. It is one of the labs of CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research), and it works on science and engineering for a cleaner environment. Its best-known task is green crackers: firecrackers made to release less particulate matter (tiny dust and smoke particles that go deep into the lungs). NEERI led the work to design these crackers. It also tests and certifies them and keeps the official list of approved formulations. In December 2025 it became the National Centre of Excellence for Green Firecrackers.
Example
For Diwali 2025 in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court allowed only NEERI-listed green crackers to be sold, and only from 18 to 20 October 2025. NEERI says green crackers cut particulate emissions by at least 30% and by up to 80%. They do not cut them to zero, and Delhi's air still got much worse after that Diwali. NEERI does not recommend barium nitrate, a toxic metal compound, for green crackers.
Don't confuse with
- PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation): NEERI certifies the cracker's chemical formula. PESO grants the explosives licence to make and sell it.
- CSIR-CECRI, Karaikudi (Tamil Nadu): it is also a Centre of Excellence for Green Firecrackers, but the national centre and the certifier is NEERI in Nagpur.
