Cyclone Biparjoy (2023)
Topic: Air Masses, Fronts, Cyclones and Thunderstorms · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Cyclone Biparjoy was an Arabian Sea cyclone of June 2023 that lasted about 13 days, which is very long for a cyclone. It reached extremely severe cyclonic storm strength and made landfall near Jakhau port in Kachchh, Gujarat, on 15 June 2023. The government followed a "zero casualty" approach, with mass evacuation before landfall, and deaths stayed very low. It also shows that Arabian Sea cyclones are becoming more frequent and stronger.
Example
Before Biparjoy crossed the coast near Jakhau in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, large numbers of people living near the coast were moved to shelters.
Don't confuse with
- Cyclone Fani (2019): also a success of evacuation, but in the Bay of Bengal, striking Odisha near Puri.
