Daylight saving time
Also called: DST, Summer time · Topic: Latitude, Longitude and Time · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Daylight saving time (DST) means moving clocks one hour forward in summer and back again in autumn. Mid-latitude summers have long days. Moving the clock gives people more daylight in the evening. It is common in Europe and North America. Its energy savings are disputed, and the EU has debated ending it. India does not use DST, because day length changes little at low latitudes.
Example
The United Kingdom moves its clocks one hour ahead of GMT each summer. India keeps IST (UTC+5:30) all year.
Don't confuse with
- Chai bagaan time: this is a fixed local time about one hour ahead of IST, kept all year in Assam's tea gardens. It is not a seasonal clock change.
