Denudation

Geography glossary

Topic: Geomorphic Processes: Weathering, Mass Movement, Erosion and Soil Formation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Geomorphic Processes"

Meaning

Denudation means "to strip off". It is the umbrella term for all exogenic processes that wear away and lower the land: weathering, mass wasting, erosion and transportation. Each has its own driving force. Gravity, temperature and chemical action drive weathering and mass movement. The kinetic energy (energy of motion) of water, ice, wind and waves drives erosion and transport. The energy comes ultimately from the sun.

Example

The Aravalli range in Rajasthan is a very old fold mountain range. Over a very long time, denudation has worn it down to low, broken hills.

Don't confuse with

  • Erosion: this is only one part of denudation. It means agents picking up and carrying away debris. Denudation includes weathering and mass wasting as well.
