Deodar
Also called: Himalayan cedar · Topic: Natural Vegetation and Forests of India · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Deodar, also called the Himalayan cedar, is a tall conifer (a cone-bearing tree with needle-like leaves). It grows in the temperate zone of the Himalayas. It is endemic to the western Himalayas, which means it grows naturally only there. Its wood is strong and resists rot, so it is valued for construction.
Example
Deodar forests grow on the temperate slopes of the western Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Deodar wood is used in buildings across these hills.
Don't confuse with
- Chir pine: grows lower down, at about 1,500-1,750 m. It is valued for resin and timber. The British spread it widely in place of oak.
