Meaning

The Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR) is a new industrial city being built on the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat. It is a greenfield city, which means it is built from scratch on empty land, not inside an old town. It is a node (a key planned stop) on the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. Firms there get land, power, roads and other facilities from the start. Critics say building it may harm the area's coastal ecology.

Example

The semiconductor fab (a factory that makes computer chips) of Tata, built with Taiwan's PSMC, was approved for Dholera in 2024. Gujarat was chosen because it offered land, supportive policy and ports.

Don't confuse with

  • Sanand: also in Gujarat, but it is an existing industrial area near Ahmedabad. It hosts the Micron chip assembly and test plant, which packs and tests chips but does not make them. Dholera hosts the chip fab.
