Digital Agriculture Mission

Also called: Agri Stack · Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Digital Agriculture Mission was approved on 2 September 2024. It builds digital public infrastructure for farming, meaning shared digital systems that government and service providers can all use. Its main part is AgriStack, which has three pieces:

  • A farmer ID registry, giving each farmer a digital identity
  • Geo-referenced village maps, which show the exact location of each plot
  • A Digital Crop Survey, which records the crop sown on each plot every season

The mission also adds the Krishi Decision Support System, which brings together data on crops, soil and weather. With accurate data, the government can target crop insurance, credit and advice better.

Example

During the kharif season, field staff use the Digital Crop Survey to record that a particular geo-mapped plot is under paddy. That record can then be used to settle a crop insurance claim quickly.

Don't confuse with

  • DILRMP / ULPIN: these digitise land ownership records and give each plot an ID. AgriStack records who farms the land and what crop they grow on it each season.
