Durgaduani tidal power project
Topic: Movements of Ocean Water: Waves, Tides and Currents · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 13 "Movements of Ocean Water"
Meaning
The Durgaduani tidal power project was a planned 3 MW tidal power plant at Durgaduani creek in the Sundarbans, West Bengal. Tidal power works by building floodgates across a creek to trap seawater at high tide. The trapped water is then let out through turbines as the tide falls. NCERT describes the project as "under way". It was later dropped because it cost too much (verify current). The project matters for exams because it shows both India's tidal energy plans and why they have stalled.
Example
Durgaduani creek lies in the Sundarbans, in the Gangetic delta in West Bengal. Class 10 NCERT names the Sundarbans, along with the Gulf of Khambhat and the Gulf of Kachchh, as an ideal site for tidal energy. The Kachchh (Mandvi) and Kalpasar (Khambhat) proposals have also not gone ahead.
Don't confuse with
- Kalpasar project: a proposal in the Gulf of Khambhat, Gujarat, not in the Sundarbans. It has also not gone ahead.
