Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment

Meaning

The Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment is a yearly check of India's groundwater. The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and the states carry it out together, block by block. For each block it compares how much water is pumped out in a year with how much rain and rivers can safely put back. The result is the stage of extraction, which is yearly extraction ÷ yearly extractable recharge × 100. Each block is then classed as safe, semi-critical, critical or over-exploited, so the government knows where to act first.

Example

In 2024 the national stage of extraction was about 60%. Over-exploited blocks were bunched together in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, and Punjab's own stage was about 156% (verify current).

Don't confuse with

  • National Aquifer Mapping and Management Programme (NAQUIM): it maps where aquifers lie and what they are like. The yearly assessment measures how much water is going in and out.
