Earth Overshoot Day

Meaning

Earth Overshoot Day is the date each year when human demand on nature goes beyond what the Earth can renew in that whole year. After that date, we are using up nature's stock instead of living on what it produces each year. The Global Footprint Network calculates it from the ecological footprint, the land and water area needed to supply what we use and to absorb our waste. An earlier date means greater overuse.

Example

In 2025, Earth Overshoot Day fell on 24 July (verify current). This means humanity used a full year's worth of nature's renewal in about seven months, roughly 1.7 Earths' worth of resources.

Don't confuse with

  • Ecological footprint: an area measured in global hectares. Earth Overshoot Day is a calendar date worked out from it.
  • Planetary boundaries: nine safe limits for the Earth system, such as climate change and freshwater. They are not a single yearly date.
