Electronics manufacturing hubs
Also called: Mobile phone manufacturing · Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Electronics manufacturing hubs are places where devices such as mobile phones are assembled. India is the world's second-largest mobile phone maker (verify current). The production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme of 2020 pays companies a reward that grows as they make and sell more. This scheme, together with rising iPhone exports, has driven growth. Factories gather where land, skilled workers, good roads and ports are available.
Example
Phone assembly is concentrated in Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Sriperumbudur and Hosur (Tamil Nadu), and Bengaluru (Karnataka).
Don't confuse with
- Software or IT services: software is written in offices and sold as code and services. Electronics hubs make physical devices in factories.
- Semiconductor units: these make or package chips, for example at Sanand and Dholera in Gujarat. Phone hubs put finished devices together.
