Fisheries in India
Also called: Blue Revolution · Topic: Major Crops of India: Distribution and Conditions · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Fisheries means catching fish and raising fish for food and income. India is the second-largest fish producer in the world. Inland fishing (in rivers, lakes and ponds) and aquaculture (fish farming) now give about three-quarters of the output. Sea fishing gives the rest (verify current). Government schemes include the Blue Revolution (2015-16) and the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana (2020). One problem is that shrimp ponds have destroyed mangroves.
Example
Andhra Pradesh leads, mainly through farmed shrimp in the Godavari–Krishna deltas on the east coast. West Bengal comes next with freshwater carp. Sea fishing is strongest off Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Don't confuse with
- White Revolution: this was the drive to raise milk output. The Blue Revolution was the drive to raise fish output.
