Friedrich Ratzel
Topic: Human Geography: Nature, Scope and Approaches · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Human Geography: Nature and Scope"
Meaning
Friedrich Ratzel (1844-1904) was a German geographer. He defined human geography as the "synthetic study of relationship between human societies and earth's surface". His keyword is synthesis, which means joining together the study of people and land. His book Anthropogeographie helped build environmental determinism, the idea that nature shapes human life and culture. He also saw the state as a living organism that needs land to grow, and called this land Lebensraum ("living space"). Later, others misused this idea to justify conquest.
Example
A Ratzel-style study of the Ganga plain in north India would link its flat land, fertile alluvial soil and rivers to its dense villages, farming and large cities. It would treat land and society as one joined subject.
Don't confuse with
- Ellen Churchill Semple: she was Ratzel's American follower. Her keyword is dynamism ("unresting man and the unstable earth"), not synthesis.
