Gender geography
Topic: Human Geography: Nature, Scope and Approaches · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Human Geography: Nature and Scope"
Meaning
Gender geography is a sub-field of social geography. Its sister disciplines are sociology, anthropology and women's studies. It studies how gender shapes the way people use space, move around, and reach resources and opportunities. For example, it looks at how far women can travel safely, how much time they spend on household work, and how gender gaps differ from district to district. These maps help planners decide where help is needed most.
Example
In many villages of the Thar desert in western Rajasthan, women and girls walk long distances every day to fetch water. Gender geography maps this burden and shows how it cuts into their time for school and paid work.
Don't confuse with
- Population geography: it measures things like sex ratio and its sister discipline is demography. Gender geography studies how gender shapes people's use of space and their access to resources.
