Gir range

Geography glossary

Also called: Gir hills · Topic: Structure and Physiography of India: Himalayas, Plains, Peninsula, Coasts and Islands · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Structure and Physiography"

Meaning

The Gir range is a group of low hills on the Saurashtra (Kathiawar) peninsula of Gujarat. It marks the western edge of the Peninsular plateau. The hills are covered with dry deciduous forest (trees that shed their leaves in the dry season). These forests are the last place in the world where the Asiatic lion still lives in the wild. That makes Gir very important for wildlife protection.

Example

The Gir Forest in southern Saurashtra, Gujarat, is the only wild home of the Asiatic lion.
