Global village

Geography glossary

Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"

Meaning

The global village is an idea from the Canadian thinker Marshall McLuhan in the 1960s. He said that modern communication links the whole world as closely as people in one village. The internet, television, radio and fax let news and ideas cross the world almost at once, however far apart people are. NCERT stresses that communication, more than transport, made this idea real.

Example

When a major event happens anywhere, people in a Mumbai flat and in a small Kerala village can watch it live on TV or their phones. They learn of it at the same moment as people next door to it.

Don't confuse with

  • Globalisation: the growing flow of trade, money and people between countries. The global village is about the world feeling small because of instant communication.
