GM mustard

Meaning

GM mustard is a genetically modified (GM) hybrid mustard called DMH-11. Genetically modified means genes from another living thing have been added to it. It was developed at Delhi University. In October 2022, the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) cleared it for environmental release. The GEAC is the body that approves GM crops in India. Supporters hope it will raise mustard yields and cut India's edible-oil imports. In July 2024, the Supreme Court gave a split verdict on the case, so it was sent to a larger bench (verify current).

Example

If it is allowed, GM mustard would be grown mainly in the rabi mustard belt of the north-west. Rajasthan alone gives about one-third of India's mustard.

Don't confuse with

  • Genome-edited rice (DRR Dhan 100 Kamala, Pusa DST Rice 1; May 2025): these were made by editing the plant's own genes, with no foreign DNA added. GM mustard is transgenic, which means it carries added foreign genes.
