Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Meaning

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydropower dam. A hydropower dam uses falling water to make electricity. Ethiopia built it on the Blue Nile, near its border with Sudan, and inaugurated it in 2025. Egypt and Sudan lie downstream and fear the dam will cut the water they get. Egypt depends almost entirely on the Nile. This makes GERD a leading case of conflict over a shared river (verify current).

Example

The Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and brings most of the Nile's water. GERD is built on it. Downstream, the Blue Nile meets the White Nile at Khartoum, and the Nile then flows north through Egypt to Egypt's own Aswan High Dam (1970).

Don't confuse with

  • Aswan High Dam: Egypt's dam (1970), which formed Lake Nasser. It lies far downstream on the main Nile. GERD is upstream, on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia.
