Himadri station
Topic: World Physical Features and Natural Regions · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Himadri station is India's first research station in the Arctic. It opened in 2008. It is a base where Indian scientists study ice, glaciers, the air and the sea in the far north. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) in Goa runs it. The station supports India's Arctic Policy (2022). India can work there because it is a party to the Svalbard Treaty (1920). Under this treaty, member countries can carry out activities on the islands.
Example
Himadri stands at Ny-Alesund, a small research town in Norway's Svalbard archipelago (a group of islands) in the Arctic Ocean. Scientists from many countries have stations at Ny-Alesund.
Don't confuse with
- Himadri (Greater Himalaya): this is the name of the highest and northernmost range of the Himalaya. It is a mountain range, not a research station.
- Maitri and Bharati: these are India's research stations in Antarctica, near the South Pole. Himadri is in the Arctic, near the North Pole.
