Meaning

The Hindukush and Sulaiman ranges are mountain ranges in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Together they form the north-western wall of the Indian subcontinent. Passes through them, such as the Khyber and Bolan, were the historic gateways into the subcontinent from the north-west. Several streams rise in the Sulaiman range and flow east to join the Indus.

Example

The Khurram, Tochi and Gomal rivers rise in the Sulaiman range in Pakistan and join the Indus from the west.

Don't confuse with

  • Purvachal: these hills form the subcontinent's eastern wall, along the Myanmar border. The Hindukush and Sulaiman form its north-western wall.
