Geography glossary

Also called: Homeshoring · Topic: Tertiary, Quaternary and Quinary Activities · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 6 "Tertiary and Quaternary Activities"

Meaning

Home-shoring is a new trend offered as an alternative to outsourcing. Instead of sending work overseas, a company lets its own employees do the work from their homes, within the same country. The company saves on office costs and keeps the jobs at home. Working from home spread widely after COVID-19.

Example

A company in the United States can let its customer-support staff answer calls from their own homes across the country. It does not send the calls to a call centre in another country.

Don't confuse with

  • Offshoring: this sends work to another country. Home-shoring keeps the work inside the same country, done from employees' homes.
  • Outsourcing: this gives work to an outside agency. In home-shoring the company's own employees usually do the work.
