Industrial town
Topic: Human Settlements and Urbanisation in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "Human Settlements"
Meaning
An industrial town is a town where industry is the main driving force. Factories give most of the jobs. They also pull in workers, decide where housing and roads go, and shape how the town grows. NCERT uses it as one class in the functional classification of towns, which groups towns by their main job. In India, many industrial towns came up after 1850, and more were planned after 1947.
Example
Jamshedpur in Jharkhand grew around the TISCO steel plant, set up in 1907. Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, a planned steel town built after independence, is another. Mumbai, Salem, Coimbatore, Modinagar and Hugli are also listed by NCERT.
Don't confuse with
- Mining town: a town that grows where minerals are dug out, such as Jharia (coal) or Digboi (oil). An industrial town processes raw materials into goods; a mining town extracts them.
