Jaitapur nuclear project
Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Jaitapur nuclear project is a planned nuclear power park in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. It would have six large reactors of the French EPR design. EPR is a type of pressurised water reactor. In it, water under high pressure carries heat away from the core. If built, it would add a lot of capacity to India's nuclear power. The project has stalled, and local people have long protested over land, fishing and safety.
Example
The site is on the Konkan coast at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. The sea there can supply the large amounts of cooling water the reactors would need.
Don't confuse with
- Tarapur Atomic Power Station: also in Maharashtra. It is India's first nuclear station, running since 1969 with US-built boiling water reactors. Jaitapur is planned but not yet built.
