Jog Falls
Also called: Gersoppa Falls · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 3 "Landforms and Life"
Meaning
Jog Falls, also called Gersoppa Falls, is a waterfall about 253 m high on the Sharavati river in Shivamogga district, Karnataka. The Sharavati is a short, swift west-flowing river of the Western Ghats. Here it drops straight over the steep western edge of the plateau. Jog is among India's highest plunge falls, where water falls freely without touching the rock face. The same steep drop that makes the falls also makes the Sharavati good for hydroelectric power.
Example
The Linganamakki dam, upstream on the Sharavati, stores water for power generation. The falls are fullest during the southwest monsoon, from July to September. In the dry season, when water is held back at the dam, they become thin.
Don't confuse with
- Dhuandhar Falls: this is a much smaller drop of about 30 m on the Narmada at Bhedaghat near Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. It is famous for its marble gorge, not its height.
