Meaning

The Khyber Pass is a mountain pass through the Spin Ghar range. It joins Peshawar in Pakistan with Kabul in Afghanistan. For centuries, armies and traders from Central Asia used it to enter the Indian subcontinent. Because of this, it is called a historic gateway for both invasion and trade.

Example

The Khyber Pass climbs west from Peshawar towards the Afghan border on the road to Kabul. It lies near the Durand Line, the 1893 boundary between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Don't confuse with

  • Bolan Pass: the Bolan Pass is another historic gateway, but it lies farther south, near Quetta. The Khyber Pass is in the north, near Peshawar.
