Kobe-Osaka industrial region

Geography glossary

Also called: Hanshin industrial region · Topic: Secondary Activities: Manufacturing and Industrial Location · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"

Meaning

The Kobe-Osaka industrial region, also called the Hanshin industrial region, is a crowded industrial belt around Osaka Bay in western Honshu, Japan. It lies in the Kansai area. NCERT uses it to show how industry draws large numbers of people. Factories attract workers. They also attract traders, transporters and people who provide services. This is a good example of agglomeration, where firms and people gather close together to share benefits.

Example

Osaka and the port city of Kobe stand on Osaka Bay. Together they form one continuous industrial and urban area. Factories, ports, shops and offices sit side by side there, and the population density is very high.

Don't confuse with

  • Tokyo-Yokohama (Keihin) region: this is Japan's other major industrial belt, around Tokyo Bay in eastern Honshu. Kobe-Osaka lies further west, around Osaka Bay.
