Meaning

The Krishna river is the second largest east-flowing Peninsular river, after the Godavari. It rises near Mahabaleshwar in the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) and flows about 1,401 km east to the Bay of Bengal, where it builds a delta. Its main tributaries are the Koyna, Tungabhadra and Bhima. Its basin is shared by Maharashtra (27%), Karnataka (44%) and Andhra Pradesh with Telangana (29%). Because several states share its water, it is at the centre of long inter-state disputes.

Example

The Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams on the Krishna, on the Telangana–Andhra Pradesh border, supply irrigation water and hydropower. The Bachawat tribunal gave its award on sharing Krishna water in 1976. The creation of Telangana in 2014 reopened the question.

Don't confuse with

  • Godavari river: the Godavari, not the Krishna, is the largest Peninsular river and is called the "Dakshin Ganga". Calling the Krishna the largest is a common exam trap.
