Geography glossary

Topic: Landforms and their Evolution: Rivers, Groundwater, Glaciers, Waves and Wind · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Landforms and their Evolution"

Meaning

A landform is a small to medium patch of the earth's surface. It has its own shape, size and materials. A particular process, such as erosion or deposition, and a particular agent, such as a river, glacier, wind or waves, made it. Every landform has a history: it changes through stages over time.

Example

The Hogenakkal gorge on the Kaveri, in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu, is a landform. Running water cut it into hard rock.

Don't confuse with

  • Landscape: a landscape is a larger area made up of several related landforms. A single gorge is a landform. The whole river valley around it, with its gorge, rapids and hills, is a landscape.
