Latur earthquake 1993

Geography glossary

Also called: Killari earthquake · Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Natural Hazards and Disasters: Causes, Consequences and Management"

Meaning

The Latur earthquake, also called the Killari earthquake, struck on 30 September 1993 at about magnitude 6.2. About 10,000 people died. Many were crushed when their heavy stone houses collapsed. The quake showed that the "stable" Peninsula is not free of earthquakes. It also showed that weak buildings, not just shaking, cause most deaths.

Example

The quake hit Killari village in Latur district, Maharashtra, on the Deccan plateau. It is linked to the Bhima fault, a fault zone along the Bhima river near Latur and Osmanabad.

Don't confuse with

  • Koyna earthquake 1967: this was also in Maharashtra, but it was reservoir-induced, meaning it was triggered by filling a dam's reservoir. Latur was not near a large reservoir.
  • Bhuj earthquake 2001: that quake hit Kachchh in Gujarat. It was stronger (about magnitude 7.7) and killed about 20,000.
