Lebensraum
Also called: Living space · Topic: Human Geography: Nature, Scope and Approaches · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Lebensraum is a German word meaning "living space". Friedrich Ratzel used it in Politische Geographie (1897) and in an essay in 1901. He saw the state as a living organism that needs more land as it grows, the way a growing body needs food. Later, Karl Haushofer and the Nazis twisted the idea to justify taking land by force in eastern Europe. It is a key example of how geographical ideas can be misused for war and racism.
Example
Nazi Germany used the idea of Lebensraum to justify invading Poland and other lands in eastern Europe. It claimed that Germans needed more "living space".
Don't confuse with
- Heartland theory: Mackinder's theory (1904) is about which region of Eurasia gives world power. It is not about a state's need to grow like an organism.
