Meaning

Makhana, or fox nut, is the seed of a water plant called Euryale ferox. The plant grows in ponds and wetlands. Farmers collect the seeds from the pond bottom, then roast and pop them into light white puffs. Makhana is a healthy snack, and it gives work to many poor families in wetland areas.

Example

The Mithila region of north Bihar grows about 90% of India's makhana in its ponds and wetlands. Mithila Makhana got a GI tag in 2022. A GI is a label for goods whose quality or fame comes from a particular place. A Makhana Board was announced in Budget 2025-26.

Don't confuse with

  • Lotus seed: lotus seed comes from another water plant. Makhana comes from Euryale ferox, a prickly water lily.
