Topic: Human Geography: Nature, Scope and Approaches · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Human Geography: Nature and Scope"

Meaning

Military geography is a sub-field of political geography. Its sister discipline is military science. It studies how terrain, mountain passes, climate and location matter for defence and war. Large land areas and wide oceans once gave countries natural protection. Military geography helps planners decide where to guard borders and move troops.

Example

The Siliguri corridor is a narrow strip of land in northern West Bengal. It is the only land link between India's north-eastern states and the rest of the country. This makes it very important for defence. The icy Siachen glacier in the Karakoram is another key case.

Don't confuse with

  • Geopolitics: it looks at how geography shapes a state's overall power and world strategy. Military geography deals with the actual terrain and conditions of defence and fighting.
