Mineral Security Partnership

Meaning

The Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) is a group led by the United States. It has about 14 countries plus the European Union, and India joined in June 2023. It aims to build supply chains for critical minerals that are spread across many sources and run responsibly, with care for people and nature. A supply chain is the full path from mine to processing plant to factory. The main goal is to make sure no single country controls the supply.

Example

Much of the processing of critical minerals happens in China, and China leads the world in refining rare earths and making rare-earth magnets. In 2025 China cut back its magnet exports, which hurt makers of EVs and wind turbines in other countries. Groups like the MSP try to stop this kind of risk by building other sources of supply.

Don't confuse with

  • MSP (Minimum Support Price): this is the price the government promises farmers for their crops. It shares the same short form but has nothing to do with minerals.
  • Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL): this is an Indian company that buys mineral assets abroad. The MSP is a partnership between countries.
