Also called: Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes · Topic: Natural Vegetation and Forests of India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
MISHTI stands for Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes. It is a government scheme announced in the 2023-24 Budget and launched on 5 June 2023. It plants mangroves along India's coasts and on salt-pan land (flat coastal land used to make salt). It does not have a separate budget. It draws money from MGNREGS, CAMPA and other schemes. The target is about 540 sq km of mangroves over five years (verify current).
Example
Gujarat, which has the second-largest mangrove area in India after West Bengal (verify current), can use MISHTI to plant mangroves on its tidal mudflats and salt-pan land. The new mangroves help protect the coast from cyclones.
Don't confuse with
- CAMPA: the body that manages compensatory afforestation funds paid by builders who use forest land. MISHTI is one scheme that draws on these funds.
