Mississippi-Ohio waterway
Also called: Mississippi waterway · Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Mississippi-Ohio waterway is a river system that links the interior of the USA with the Gulf of Mexico. The Ohio River joins the Mississippi, and together they carry heavy cargo deep inland. Large steamers can sail up the Mississippi as far as Minneapolis. The waterway gives inland farms and industries a cheap way to the sea.
Example
Memphis (Tennessee), on the Mississippi, is an inland port. Goods loaded there can travel by river all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
Don't confuse with
- Great Lakes-St Lawrence Seaway: this waterway links the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean through the St Lawrence, not with the Gulf of Mexico.
